Having only been established in August of 2020, KumulCare aims to be a leader in breaking down barriers faced by people living with disabilities. Our approach to the work we do is a blend of the human rights based model and the social model of disability (see 'Educational Resources' tab for a more detailed outline of the four main models of disability).
Rural PNG is rife with rigid traditional, cultural and uninformed views and beliefs on disability. As a result, more than 1 million people living with disabilities in our villages experience neglect, discrimination and exclusion. These act as barriers to school, work, family and community participation which then significantly reduces quality of life. We, at KumulCare, aim to increase awareness and education on the rights of those living with disabilities in our rural villages to help recreate inclusive and informed villages where barriers to a great quality of life do not exist.
